FiPet

FiPet is an app that aims to bring fun into teaching financial concepts to teenagers. Users learn by taking 5-minute financial lessons, which allows them to gain XP and grow their Pets. Users can then Battle other users and purchase accessories for their Pets.

I was brought into the project about halfway through the summer, after the art direction had already been decided and most of the screens had been designed. My first task was to design layouts for the promotional website; after this, I was moved to the app screens, where I worked on animating components and designing new screens. I also led efforts to clean up the overall visual look of the app.

FiPet was designed in collaboration with Divya Malpuri, Japleen Deng, Julienne Strydom, and Ben Hurwitz.

Screens and Art Direction Tweaks

Shortly after I began working on the app screens, the Head of Graphic Design left the project due to other commitments. I was chosen to replace him, and I then worked to refine the art direction, with the aim to produce a more refined color palette, cohesive typography system, and create consistent, reusable components for buttons, cards, and navigational elements.

Since our initial art direction involved inspiration from Liquid Glass, I updated the bottom navigation and buttons to a more glass-like appearance, and I updated the bottom-navigation icons and the top banner to be the color orange to increase consistency.

When reworking the backgrounds of specific screens, I wanted something that would inform the user of the greater World of FiPet while remaining simple and non-distracting. I ended up integrating a simple cloud background with soft colors to give context to the Pet’s surroundings while remaining non-distracting.

The initial app design included two home screens: one that focused on the Pet energy levels, mood, and daily tasks, and another home screen that focused on interacting with the Pet. I combined both home screens into one home screen in order to make the app’s navigation easier.
